Every so often you decide to use your phone less. You delete an app, set a limit, promise yourself tonight will be different. And then, somewhere between the kettle and the couch, your thumb has opened the same feed again before you noticed deciding to.
It is tempting to read that as a character flaw. It is not. The apps on your phone are made by large teams whose whole job is to keep you in them, and they are very good at it. Asking willpower to win that fight, every day, alone, is a bad bet. You are not weak. You are outnumbered.
Friction beats force
The useful question is not how to resist harder. It is how to add one more step between you and the scroll. Habits live on ease. The feed wins because it is always one tap away, and nothing ever stands in the way. Put something in the way, even something small, and the automatic reach turns into a moment where you actually choose.
Make it physical
This is why settings rarely hold. A screen time limit is undone by the same thumb that wants to scroll, in the same second. A physical step is different. If the thing that unlocks your apps is an object on your desk, or on the fridge, or on your keys across the room, getting it takes a walk. Distance does the work that willpower cannot.
Decide in advance
This is an old idea. Ulysses had himself tied to the mast before his ship passed the Sirens, because he knew the version of him hearing the song would not be the one making good decisions. Economists call it a commitment device: you make the choice while you are calm, then make breaking it inconvenient for the version of you who is not.
Honest, not a vault
We want to be plain about what this is. It is not a lock you cannot open. On an iPhone you can always get back to your apps if you truly want to. That is the point. The goal is not to trap you. It is to make getting back a decision instead of a reflex.
What we are making
Cult Focus is a free iPhone app that blocks the apps you choose, and a small coin you buy once. Start a hard lock, and the way back to your apps is a tap of your own coin. Keep it on your desk, stick it to the fridge, or clip it to your keys. The coin is made to order and finished by hand, like everything we make. There is no subscription, now or ever.
The coin is on sale now. Keep our mark on the front or swap it for an emoji, and pick the colours. Make yours here.
